Snow down, Slow down!

What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? - Romans 8:31

After 3 longgg years, the drought is finally over! The snow drought that is.

I'm 32 years old and I guess you can say that I haven't lost my childlike love for snow for a few different reasons:

  1. First, snow is a rare occurrence here in NC! Prior to the drought, a good amount of snow may fall once every other year.

  2. Snow brings so much anticipation and excitement. Whether it's an unexpected day off from work or school, it certainly gives you something to look forward to!

  3. The calm and peace that it brings. It's scientifically proven that "snow quiet" is a different kind of quiet - snow literally absorbs sound! As I watch snow fall, I always believe that it's God's way of telling our city to take a beat...

On Friday, they were calling for snow to begin and anticipated that we'd be getting about 3-4 inches.

Yayyy! Finally a snow day! :)

Too bad that I was one of - what seemed like - a very few adults who felt this way. From the looks of social media, many were dreading it for one reason or another:

Some had jobs that would still require them to go. My husband ended up still having to go into work, so I can definitely understand the concern there.

For others, it just seemed that they were frustrated because they weren't going to be able to make the moves when and how they wanted to make them. They didn't want to have to sit still!

While the latter group especially was a vibe killer, I was excited to gear up for a snowed weekend in :)

I ended up making a late night run to Target on Thursday night. I wasn't sure how long that we would be snowed in, but I shopped for about 5-6 days worth of food and snacks.

I had also decided how I'd planned to spend the snowed in weekend:

I would try out a new hairstyle. Usually I don't actually "style" my hair so I figured being snowed in would give me plenty of time to experiment.

I would do some blogging (which I'm doing now!).

I would rent a new release movie for my husband and I to watch, like Mufasa or The Wild Robot and watch it with popcorn, snacks, and hot cocoa.

....and, of course, eat good :)

Friday (yesterday) comes and, sure enough, snowflakes began to fall and quickly cover the roads and buildings.

Ahh yayy!! Thank you God!!

My husband and I decided to take a walk through the snow last night. While out, I noticed other neighbors and children out playing. Very few cars were out driving. Quentin (my husband) and I even started our own little snowball fight!

Early this morning, one of Quentin's colleagues came to pick him up to work a shift from 1am-7am. Of course, I would've loved for him to stay home with me, but I was relieved to know that his colleague was at least equipped for a drive in the snow.

I went to bed that night thinking, "this is about to be an amazing, peaceful weekend..."

Our apartment building sits right beside the highway, so we hear all of the traffic coming up and down. While I would've expected to only hear an occasional car come down, instead I woke up and heard several cars driving down it...

When I spoke to my husband on his ride home, he let me know that many of the main roads had been cleared and that lots of cars were still out. He even went to run a few Saturday morning errands in his car.

I peeped on social media, only to find others laughing about how little snow that we'd gotten. (We ended up getting a little over 2 inches - which is actually pretty good for Greensboro)

*sigh*

It was clear. This wasn't going to be the quiet snow weekend that I'd anticipated for everyone. This was going to be a normal Saturday...

I decided to take an early morning walk. As I walked, I asked God, "why can't people just stay still?"

Now, the roads being clear is great for emergency workers and people that had to go into work. Y'all not really who I'm talking to.

It's those people who are sooo in a hurry to do what they want to do: Go get takeout. Go shopping. Go get there nails done.

To me, this snow day was a golden opportunity for our city to take a "pause": Rest. Enjoy the snow. Spend quality time with loved ones. Yet, it just seemed like everyone is just so restless.

I know it's counterintuitive to the expectations of our "get to it" society but I believe that our society could use a snow day (or several). With anxiety on the rise, it's clear that we're moving at a faster pace than God intended. Even He took a rest on the seventh day and desires for us to. It's in those moments that we learn to trust and depend on what He can do rather than just we're capable of.

With so many people on the roads and the sun melting the snow, I probably could've gotten around just fine on the roads...but I'd made up my mind: I was still going to have the snow day that I intended to have!

I washed my hair and tried out the new hairstyle that I intended to try. Turned out pretty cute!

While doing my hair, I listened to some great podcast convos, including the new episode of R&B Money with Erica Campbell. She dropped many gems in this episode, but this one truly stood out to me. Take a look below!

I am blogging now - thanks for reading this BGP post (Leave me a comment to say hey!)

If I finish this post at a reasonable time - which it's looking like I will - I will watch a movie until I K.O.!

But, yeah.

I'm not sure if I'm the only one that feels this way, but our world is sooo restless. I felt this way during COVID times as well. By no means am I perfect at this, but I pray that we will all learn to be ok with being still. When we're still, God promises that we will know that He is God. We'll understand that there's truly nothing more important than Him, His plans for us, and the depth of His love for us!
